It’s that time of year again! Mark your calendar’s for June 28-30, 2024. This year’s event explores issues of historic preservation as a means of supporting culturally rich, vibrant, affordable, and sustainable communities! It will be held at the Tompkins Center for History and culture at 110 North Tioga Street, Ithaca, NY.

The fourth annual Historic Preservation Planning Alumni, Inc. Symposium will be a hybrid event. This year we are incorporating trainings and field sessions (in-person only) in addition to traditional presentations and panel sessions. See below for our list of distinguished speakers.

Prof. Michael Tomlan, Director of the Cornell Historic Preservation Graduate Program, will welcome the hybrid attendees to this year’s symposium and provide a program update.

2:30 PM

HPP '24 graduates (Henny Angkasa, Claire Buchinger, Brytton Burnside, Kami Cai, Jhon Cotrina, Jiayi Li, Yulin Li, Christina Nagel) will present their Master’s theses.

4:00 PM

Elise Johnson-Schmidt, AIA, BArch ‘84 will present Using Historic Preservation Tax Credits to Develop Market Rate and Affordable Housing highlighting examples of projects with before/after photographs, how a pro forma is established, and the historic preservation tax credit process for revitalizing historic buildings.

Sara Bronin, the 12th Chair of the United States Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), will deliver the Keynote address for the 2024 HPPA Symposium.

10:00 AM

Dr. Jeff Iovannone, HPP ‘23 will present A Different Kind of Family: Lavender Hill and the Architecture of 1970s-era Gay and Lesbian Communes about Lavender Hill, a rural LGBTQ commune near Ithaca, NY, active from 1973 to 1983, highlighting its experimental non-rectilinear architecture as a symbol of resistance against mainstream patriarchal norms, while advocating for its recognition as a historically significant site representative of LGBTQ communal living during the 1970s.

Dr. Zak Leonard, HPP ‘24 will present Evolving Nonprofits: Reconsidering Historic Property Ownership in 2024 outlining the Blue Grass Trust's innovative approaches to two iconic properties in Lexington, Kentucky: Hopemont, an 1814 Federal mansion, and Pope Villa, designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1810-1811.

Andrew R Roblee., HPP ‘17 will present a video entitled “Historic Buildings are Green Buildings, or How Preservation Sustains Us”, a brief introduction to Historic Preservation and its relationship to sustainability.

Maryam Rabi, HPP ‘18 will present Conservation of the Lahore Museum. The Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project, in partnership with the World Bank and the Government of Punjab, aims to conserve and improve the museum's appeal with a detailed masterplan.

1:45 PM

HPP 2003: Where are They Now? Four members of the Class of 2003 alumni will speak about their variety of experiences working in the historic preservation field since leaving West Sibley Hall, then take audience Q&A.

Dr. Jeff Iovannone will lead the Ithaca LGBTQ Print Culture Walking Tour which explores six historic sites related to LGBTQ print culture, including the Ithaca Gay People's Center, Firebrand Books headquarters, The Feminist Studio, Borealis Books, Smedley's Bookshop, and Larry Mitchell's residence/Calamus Books headquarters.
